August 1st marks the start of a new racing season but for those with horses it is a celebratory occasion as it also marks the birthday of Southern Hemisphere Thoroughbreds, so today all of our horses age another year older (in the Northern Hemisphere the universal Horse’s birthday is January 1st).
Just like humans horses’s do actually have a birth date (referred to as a foaling date) however, due to the varying times that foals can be born it is much easier to have a universal date in which for racing purposes indicates the horses’s age. This makes it easier for trainers to enter horses into the right races that may have age restrictions.
We wish all of our horses a very happy birthday and look forward to the new racing season.
