Earlier in the year Randwick trainers took to a vote in relation to the installation of a new Poly track replacing the previous American Dirt Track, another surface to train horses on when weather conditions aren’t so favourable to be on the grass tracks.
With the green light given, works on the new surface commenced on Tuesday 16th October and weather permitting should see the new surface fully functional by the end of the year. With the addition of this new surface, it takes the training facilities at Royal Randwick to a world class level and gives trainers another option to include in the training schedules of their horses.
For those not familiar with the surface, the dirt is the same surface that is commonly used in American Racing and referrerd to as an “all weather surface”. The Polytrack consists of silica sand along with recycled synthetic fibres and recycled rubber, with the final mixture being coated in wax. Once complete Randwick will join other tracks such as Canterbury,Hawkesbury, Caulfield, Pakenham and on a global scale joining countries such as America & Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
The new surface is part of a larger scale upgrade that has been undertaken at Randwick, recently all walking machines were upgraded to new machines and have now been in operation for the past few months.
