A small team of 3 runners head up to Newcastle for today’s provincial racing and on board will be the promising 3 year old filly MAYROSE who will be looking to qualify for the Final of the Midway Series to be run on Day 2 of The Championships (9th April).
The filly by Pride Of Dubai captured the attention of racing experts when she made her racing debut at Goulburn back in August of last year. Under the riding of Alysha Collett the filly raced very greenly however still managed to run second and showed that she has ability. Next start she was sent back to Goulburn and again raced greenly (but improved) and record another second next to her name. On the back of this run John spoke with connections and it was decided to give her a chance at Midweek racing, this saw her line up in a maiden over 1100m on the Kensington track at Royal Randwick. Unable to ride, Alysha passed on her knowledge of the filly to brother Jason who jumped aboard.
Jumping with the field, the favourite settled off the leaders in a handy position on the rail looking for clear running when turning for home. With the blinkers applied, once asked to grind through her gears she was able to run down the leader and break the maiden status at start number 3 by less than a length. After providing her connections with excitement and high hopes for the future she was sent for a well earned break before returning back to the stables and lining up at her first shot at black type in the Listed Reginald Allen for the 3 year old fillies. Finishing down the field behind talented filly Fangirl, Mayrose was sent back out to the paddock and returned to the barrier trials earlier this year.
First up for her current preparation she was sent to Canterbury and wasn’t expected to do too much as reflected by the odds that she went around at, however, the filly again showed that she is a quality filly when storming down the outside to record her second career win. John realising what he has in the talented filly, then gave her a big step up in grade when in her last start she lined up in the Midway Handicap over 1100m on the 26th of February in extremely heavy conditions. Again the filly showed that she is definitely one to put in the black book when putting on a dominant performance to record win number 3 from just 6 starts with 2 minor placings next to her name.
Today she will line up in the Midway Qualifier (race 7) and all that needs to be done is to finish either 1st or 2nd to make the final. Jason Collett aboard again today and will jump from barrier 12.
Good Luck to the connections as they continue on the journey with their filly.
